SUBSOIL MULCHING &
LAND RESTORATION
Transform Reclaimed Land into a Beautiful, Grass-Ready Landscape.
Golden Landworks provides advanced subsoil mulching services throughout Virginia, helping landowners restore disturbed ground, improve soil health, and prepare their property for hydroseeding, pasture restoration, homesites, and beautiful finished landscapes.

THE NEXT EVOLUTION OF LAND RESTORATION
One of the most common questions we hear after completing a forestry mulching project is:
"How do we turn this into a lawn?"
Until now, the answer often involved hiring multiple contractors for grading, tilling, debris removal, soil preparation, and finally seeding or sod installation.
We believed there should be a better solution. That's why Golden Landworks invested in advanced subsoil mulching technology - allowing us to take your property beyond land clearing and much closer to the finished landscape you've envisioned.
We call this process The Golden Finish.
WHAT IS SUBSOIL MULCHING?
Subsoil mulching is a land management and soil improvement process that uses specialized equipment to grind and mix vegetation, roots, and organic matter directly into the soil. Unlike surface forestry mulching, which simply lays shredded plant material on top, subsoil mulching grinds and buries root systems up to 10" deep into the ground. Instead of hiring separate contractors for forestry mulching, stump removal, and grading - Golden Landworks handles it all in one step
Unlike traditional tilling or grading, subsoil mulching works deeper within the soil profile to:
-
Breaks up compacted soil, improving aeration and water infiltration.
-
Recycles organic matter by turning unwanted brush, trees, or vegetation into nutrient-rich mulch within the soil.
-
Improves soil fertility by boosting organic content and microbial activity.
-
Reduces erosion and runoff, since the soil structure is strengthened.
-
Prepares land for new use, such as farming, pastures, food plots, or construction.
In short, subsoil mulching is an eco-friendly way to clear land while building healthier soil, making it ideal for property owners, farmers, hunters, and land managers who want long-term productivity without stripping the land.

INTRODUCING THE GOLDEN FINISH

WHICH SOLUTION IS RIGHT FOR YOUR PROPERTY?
Each service plays a different role in transforming your property. See below for our breakdown of the key differences:
-
Forestry Mulching removes unwanted trees, brush, and invasive vegetation while leaving a protective layer of natural mulch on the surface. It's the ideal first step for reclaiming overgrown land.
-
Subsoil Mulching is the next step. Using advanced soil restoration technology, it conditions the ground beneath the surface, processes remaining roots and organic material, relieves soil compaction, and creates a smooth, nutrient-rich seedbed that's ready for hydroseeding. This is the foundation of The Golden Finish™.
-
Traditional Tilling loosens the upper layer of soil for planting, but it isn't designed to process woody material, remove buried roots, or restore previously wooded land. It works best in agricultural or landscaped areas where the ground has already been properly cleared and prepared.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is subsoil mulching?
Subsoil mulching is an advanced land restoration process that conditions the soil beneath the surface by processing remaining roots and woody material, relieving soil compaction, and creating a smooth, nutrient-rich seedbed ready for professional seed or sod installation or future landscaping.
How is subsoil mulching different from forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching removes unwanted vegetation above ground and leaves a protective layer of mulch on the surface. Subsoil mulching is the next step - it works below the surface to restore the soil itself, creating a smooth, grass-ready foundation for future improvements.
Is subsoil mulching better than forestry mulching?
They solve different problems. Forestry mulching is ideal for surface clearing with minimal disturbance. Subsoil mulching is best when you want a deeper reset - reducing regrowth potential, addressing roots/stumps below the surface, and improving the soil for what comes next.
How exactly does subsoil mulching enrich my soil?
When soil becomes compacted - either from heavy machinery, livestock, or years of natural pressure - it loses its ability to breathe and absorb water. The ground hardens, root systems struggle to grow, and water often runs off the surface instead of soaking in. Over time, soil becomes compacted by heavy equipment, livestock, or natural settling. Compacted soil is dense, hard, and resistant to water absorption - making it difficult for roots to penetrate and for vegetation to thrive. Subsoil mulching tackles this problem by grinding vegetation and roots directly into the earth, loosening dense layers and improving aeration. As the soil structure opens up, water infiltrates more easily, reducing runoff and erosion. Plants are then able to establish deeper, stronger root systems, resulting in healthier and more resilient growth.
Is subsoil mulching the same as tilling?
No. Traditional tilling primarily loosens the upper layer of soil. Subsoil mulching penetrates deeper, processes woody material beneath the surface, relieves compaction, and creates a more stable, healthier seedbed.
Can subsoil mulching be performed on land that hasn't been forestry mulched?
Yes. While it's an excellent follow-up to forestry mulching, subsoil mulching can also benefit disturbed ground, overgrown fields, pasture restoration projects, homesites, and areas where improving soil quality and preparing for grass establishment are the primary goals.
Will subsoil mulching remove rocks?
Subsoil mulching is designed to process roots and organic material while conditioning the soil. Although some smaller rocks may be worked into the soil profile, larger rocks may still require removal depending on the site conditions.
Is subsoil mulching good for pasture restoration?
Absolutely. It can help improve soil conditions, reduce compaction, process existing organic material, and create an excellent foundation for establishing healthy pasture grasses.
Can you hydroseed immediately afterward?
Yes. One of the primary benefits of The Golden Finish is preparing the property so it's ready for hydroseeding with no additional site preparation.
How much does subsoil mulching cost?
Pricing depends on the size of the property, existing conditions, terrain, accessibility, and your long-term goals. We'll provide a customized proposal after completing your complimentary property consultation.
